Happy New Year Everyone!

1 January, 2008

It is 2008, and I find myself filled with the optimism and plans that each new year brings. I hope that everyone reading this had an enjoyable xmas period and hope that the new year brings much joy. This year for me will be interesting – I will get stuck into some real research for my PhD. Maybe I will find out if I am any good at this research craic or not! I’m sure it will be fun finding out!

July 4th: American Independence Day

4 July, 2007

Independence Day is essentially ‘USA Day’ as Bastille Day is ‘France Day’ and St. Patrick’s Day is ‘Ireland Day’. It commemorates the declaration of independence of the USA from Britain in 1776 so the USA is 231 years old now, somewhat older than it’s younger brother to the north! It is also (as any good holiday should be) celebrated with barbeques!

July 1st: Canada Day

4 July, 2007

So this past Sunday I celebrated Canada Day! This is an annual celebration in Canada (and wherever there are Canadians!) remembering when Canada became self=governing in 1867 so Canada is 140 years old now! I celebrated the day in Durham with a lovely Barbeque in the College of St. Hilde and St. Bede (my girlfriend’s college). Much fun was had by all!
