Bono is Irish?!

9 July, 2007

I meant to make this post a couple of weeks ago when I heard Bono’s heritage questioned by some friends over dinner in Cambridge. That’s right Colin Farrell and Bono are both Irish!

I wonder who else people don’t know to be Irish …

On a related note I would be interested to know of anyone who is partially Irish – i.e. 1/16 Irish or smaller fractions in particular!

Sweet Home Alabama…

31 May, 2007

So it seems that an unusual law has been passed in Alabama. It is now illegal to buy/sell sex toys after lobbies from the cucumber industry …

i don’t even want to check if this is BS or not – i just want to believe it. Much funnier that way …

video here

[what makes it more funny is that the video has been flagged as inappropriate for young viewers!]

Peace Christians

31 May, 2007

Another great video on youtube today from Pat Condell. It finished with the line “Peace to everyone, especially Christians, with guns, who support the death penalty.”* Pat is a very smart, funny guy whose comedic subject matter is religion – sharp lines like this are sure to bring a giggle. And the coments are usually good for a laugh too – “i will kill you because you do not believe in god. you will burn in hell”, “all atheists will burn in hell” etc. etc.

:)

video here.

A Bill Hicks quote comes to mind… after a gig where he made a few jokes at the expense of religion he was approached by a few people who had seen the show. “Hey Bill, we heard your jokes and we didn’t like them. We’re christians and don’t take too kindly to that kind of stuff” [i am paraphrasing this - can't recall the exact words but this was the jist]. Bill replies: “You’re christians?” “yes, we are!”, “Oh … well forgive me then.”

:)

* the sad thing is is that the cardinal number of this set is non zero …

If you re-post this …

A fine video from a funny Scottish* man on youtube who goes by the name of Mark Day.

Watch.

* I am following protocol suggested by a Californian friend of mine by adding this advice for american people: scottish = willie from simpsons; irish = lucky charms guy.

The Eurovision Song Contest

13 May, 2007

As always the eurovision brought some laughs and unusual entertainment for a few hours this past saturday evening. For those of you who don’t know (apparently this amazing spectacle is not well known outside of Europe) the eurovision is a song contest between all (or most of) the countries in Europe. Each selects a song which is performed live and voted on by the public throughout the continent. Now there have been some real songs in the eurovision throughout the years and it has even propelled some people to fame (Abba, Celine Dion and Cliff Richard) but most performers of note are more-so infamous! Besides the ‘real’ songs are a huge selection of hilarious songs. I think my girlfriend summed it up this past week when she disappointedly said “there’s only one transvestite in the final this year”.
Many nations opt for a completely ridiculous song which is low on musicality (as Pharrell would say) but sometimes very high on enetertainment value! One only has a few minutes to impress so i can see why this option is taken by many nations. Also i noticed this year in particular that multi-language songs were popular. One song was even sung in 6 languages! This is obviously designed to gain a broad appreciation from all across Europe but unfortunately this particular song was rubbish.
Unfortunately my home nation finished bottom of the leader-board. The Irish entry wasn’t very good but one has to be disappointed that it was beaten by the UK entry which featured a foursome of flight attendants and included lyrics like “would you like anything to suck on for landing sir?”. That being said this is the kind of song that might do well in the eurovision as it is completely rubbish and funny. Unfortunately for the UK they were out scooched by a number of countries – most notably Ukraine (the transvestite in question lead this group’s song) and France, who had Jean Paul Gauttiere to thank for their amazing outfits which included a fake cat perched on one of the singers shoulders … whome he talked to … yes well …
All in all the eurovision was once again – a hilarious look at the best (and worst) aspects of Europe!

PS the event was held in Finland and only increases my opinion that Finland must be an extremely cool place – it has risen on my places to visit list…

PPS last year’s winners rocked – here they are.
